Development of satellite vegetation indices to assess grassland curing across Australia and New Zealand

Currently the Bureau of Meteorology distributes grassland curing maps for south-eastern Australia which are derived from remotely sensed satellite data, using an algorithm developed by CSIRO and the CFA (Country Fire Authority) in the 1980s which is based on a limited amount of field data collected in Victoria.

This project aims to identify a robust curing index to all grasslands throughout Australia and New Zealand. The information produced from this project can be used by Australian state fire and land management agencies for control burning, by the Bureau of Meteorology for fire danger prediction, and for further research by the Bushfire CRC.

This information will reduce the risk towards fire fighters and the community, and provide fire agencies with information of when particular grasslands are most vulnerable to ignite and the best time to pursue fuel reduction burning.
