Workshop - PROTECTING FIRE FIGHTERS

This workshop gave participants a chance to be part of discussion to improve how we adopt quality research into agency practice and across the industry. It was an opportunity to gain greater knowledge of the quality work of three Bushfire CRC research projects, combined with facilitated discussion to further the implementation enabling improved safety of fire fighters and increased capacity of specific agencies and the industry as a whole.

Researchers involved included:

Safe Behaviour and Decision Making- Mary Omodei (La Trobe University)

Fire Fighter Health and Safety – Dave Nichols and Brad Aisbett (Deakin University)

Information Flow and IMT effectiveness – Christine Owen (Uiversity of Tasmania)

A steering group planned the workshop with representatives from NSW RFS, Victorian CFA & DSE and WA FESA with researchers and Geoff Brown of Tangent Consulting (who facilitated at the workshop). The workshop was ideally suited to operational people, training and OH&S personnel and those with roles in IMTs.

Information package - PROTECTING FIREFIGHTERS

The Protecting Firefighters Workshop played a critical role in combining the three pieces of research mentioned above, and utilising the synergies that exist between the different subject areas. Together, these research projects on Safe Behaviour and Decision Making, Effective Incident Management Teams, and Firefighter Health and Safety, form a unique specialist course and a useful research adoption product for the fire industry.

As a result of this work, an Information Package was developed to assist understanding, to build knowledge of the research, and to provide tools for personnel in various roles in order to make tangible use of the research. To read through and take advantage of the Information Package, click here.
